Paul, I forgot to mention: please have a look at http://www.embeddedethernet.com/ for example code (only *partial* implementations of a TCP/IP stack, but perheaps this is ok for a simple domotica system not having to connect to the outside world). The code and examples are written for other CPUs but the ethernet device is CS8900, so a porting to MCB167 should be very easy.
