hi I need to know whether a usb to db-9 converter can be connected with a serial port programmer for programming at89s52..?
You mean USB to RS232?
"a serial port programmer"
You would need to ask the particular programmer's manufacturer:
* if they just use "plain" RS232 as intended, it should work;
* if they've tried to play clever tricks by bit-banging on the control lines, then it's unlikely to work.
thank you Neil for your valuable reply.. i was trying to build a rs232(db-9 version) based programmer(which could be easily connected to computers serial port) and almost got succeeded , but so as to connect the programmer to my laptop, can i use a usb->rs232 converter so that i need not buy a usb based programmer ..
Nowadays, wouldn't it make more sense to have a USB-based programmer?!
Having built the programmer you perhaps have more insight into this than most. So what exactly can you tell us about the design/construction of your device, and the software/settings you are using to drive it?
Exactly - and so you should be able to answer my earlier questions yourself:
Does it use the RS232 purely for communication, or does it rely upon some clever bit-banging on the control lines?
