A53 Cycle Count Using PMU

Hello,
I'm trying to count the number of CPU cycles on my A53 core using PMU_CCNTR. I tried enabling the PMU using DEMCR->TRCENA bit, the writes to this register seem to halt the execution of my code. Can someone guide me through?
