Big Question - ?

Hello guys

Very exited about the 8052, it is a dream come true. extremly promising for me

i know about the source stuff and the main goal of the 8052 being "compatible" for older parts

but are any of the major developers interested in making things for the 8052?

if so, what will it be the medium on which the stuff will be on?

thanks

  • "the main goal of the 8052 being "compatible" for older parts"

Not at all - the main goal of the 8052 is in implementing (relatively) small embedded control applications.

"any of the major developers interested in making things for the 8052?"

Who do you consider to be "the major developers"?

"what will it be the medium on which the stuff will be on?"

For the 8052 to actually run it, it will need to be in some sort of semiconductor memory connected to the processor's CODE space - usually Flash or (E)PROM.

In terms of delivering it to the "customer" to load into the execution memory, it could be on any convenient medium!

  • "i know about the source stuff and the main goal of the 8052 being "compatible" for older parts"

    Yes, it's 100% compatible with the 8051 and 8031.

"but are any of the major developers interested in making things for the 8052?"

Yes, I predict that they will create peripherals that can be connected to the 8052 for at least the next 25 years.

"if so, what will it be the medium on which the stuff will be on?"

Initially all software will be supplied on 8 inch floppies, later on smaller and higher capacity flopies. Maybe, one day, it will possible to store the complete development environment, simulator, source code and EPROM images on a small medium that could be fitted into a shirt pocket.

au contraire, most recently released '51 derivatives are NOT "compatible for older parts" (packaging, features, pincount, Vcc, ...)

are any of the major developers interested in making things for the 8052?
I have no idea; however, I guess that some/many/most/all truly modern washing machines have the recently released IR controller chip with a '51 core in them.
My product (is 10k/year 'major'?) has 7 '51s in a typical system.
Another product I did a few years ago with 2 '51 has sold 860000 units.

The rumors of the death of the '51 has been greatly exaggerated (paraphrasing Samuel Clemens)

If it still works and people can still use it, there is no problem with it. A lot of new designs go for 'sexy' parts because ... there new and cool. It's the hammer syndrome (give an engineer a hammer and everything is a nail.) The main reason to use an C51 part is it is familiar to a lot of people few surprises as a consequence. Use an ARM for what an ARM is good for use the c51 for what it is good for.

Now the C251 that is mostly dead.

8052 however has still a useful life.

You must make really high volume devices because most of my toys were 100 to 5000 per year. Bit more pricey however as a consequence.
