Cortex-A5 based processors

Hi all,

It is just out of curiosity that I wanted to see the chips based on Cortex-A5 core. I couldn't find much except some Atmel SAM5 or something.

For the Cortex-A8, there seem a number of processors available from Texas Instruments, Freescale, etc.

I understand that the A8 is better than A5 in terms of speed but is there any other particular reason why A5 is not present? I read in this thread that A5 is extremely power efficient and supports multi-core.

I don't have any specific project requirement or anything, so would just like to know if I am missing something... ?

Thanks,

Gopal

  • I can think of two more reasons one would design with the Cortex-A5:

    1: It's (usually) not as expensive as a Cortex-A5

2: It's more likely that you can get LQFP packages, which are easier to prototype with than BGA.

In addition: Your PCB might be easier to design, because the speed is lower; thus there's a larger margin for the layout, capacitance, crosstalk, etc..
