software based self-test of CPU

Hi!

I'm looking for a solution for testing the reliability of a XC166 controller CPU at runtime by software.
Background: each controller of a safety relevant redundant system should perform a self-test regulary (e.g. once a day). This includes a non-destructive test of the controller's RAM, registers and arithmetic unit. Testing of peripheral units is not necessary. A test program which validates the instruction set of the CPU would also be nice.

If anybody has some information on this topic, please let me know.

Thanks for your comments!
Rainer
