  • Keil has supported 8051 for a huge time - long, long long before they started to support ARM processors and suddenly became "an ARM company".

But since the current version is 5, I wondered why someone who are just starting to learn is starting with an older version.

  • I will tell you
there in Egypt in university laboratory we have the licence for the old version and i know that i could download version 5 trail for free but all assignments must be done by version 4 :D

  • I would think that it's quite likely the University then already have lots of documentation - especially since the students are then also likely to do their assignments on similar hardware.

The other alternative I was thinking about, was that you had bought some package, where you got a board and a specially licensed version of the Keil tools - in which case there would also be some step-by-step getting-started information available.

Anyway - this site has lots of documentation that you might want to browse through. There is documentation about the IDE. The debugger. How to get started. How to build...

  • Get your professors to do their JOB, and provide you with instruction and templates you need to do your course work. I'm not sure when this half-arsed level of education was acceptable, but hold them to higher standards and accountability.
