Linux on an 8-bit micro?

  • I too saw it. As ARM core is emulated on AVR micro, it runs at ca. 6.5kHz effective clock
    frequency. On the other side, I recall seeing UNIX-like OS ported to Z-80 CPU. It was called CROMIX - made by a company named Cromemco some 30+ years ago. As far as I recall, clock was 6MHz and it was a commercial product, although I doubt it had a large customer base... There's an article about it here:

    Well, it brings back memories, as Cromemco's System-three was the first computer I played with...
