Starting Up - What kit should I use

I'm want to get into embeded systems design and am wondering what the kit I should obatin to get me onto a good start?

    What are others using to program their devices.
    a) if program means write/compile/assemble, then Keil
    b) if program means put the code into the device, then it is TOTALLY device dependent.

    I'd suggest you start with a SILabs f12x devboard. That gives you EVERYTHING (protoboard, compiler, assembler, linker, loader, "ICE" and more) for $99
