there has been several posts lately by "identity thieves". Most other fora in this area require registration including e-mail address (which is not published). Is it time for required registration?
Erik
In general, with the advertisements and posers, I'm inclined to agree that the time for forum registration is now. Here's a quick and dirty idea.
1. User registers. 2. User received e-mail with link to confirm. 3. User clicks link and is registered. 4. Registration info stored in cookie on user's browser. 5. Login automatic if cookie found.
Registration details would include Real Name, Forum Handle, E-mail Address, Country, Password, Reminder Phrase.
Comments?

Perhaps store some user preferences as well: "preferred toolset", "email notification" to default those selections in the post dialog.
That is good.
a couple of possible enhancements:
"diaplayed ID" (real name if below included) must be unique. Otherwise I could register with my name as Andy Neil and use valid info for the rest.
Also, the 8052 requirement that "diaplayed ID" must be real name is very attractive, there is no obscene/cute/irritating 'handles' displayed.
This thread gets my vote. Thanks Erik for prompt. Al Bradford
So what have you finaly planned to do? or what are you planning to do?
We're working on it. But, we're still just collecting ideas. These things take time and careful consideration before implementation and deployment.
could you possibly trace the source for the 'ghost' posts and lock out that source?
have a look at phpBB, http://www.phpbb.com/ a heavy used forum software overall in the world, it has all what you need and is installed in a couple of hours
one of the best german borland delphi forum sites use this :
www.delphipraxis.net/forum_main.html
I can't remember about spam there
another good thing: members can post to each other

We have done a lot of thinking and research on this topic. So, I thought I'd report back and see where this leads.
In general, visitors to the Keil forum use a single e-mail address and name. There are a few exceptions where someone may use a different form of their name (Andy vs Andrew, for example). But, in general, everyone on the forum seems fairly honest with their names and e-mail addresses.
However, I counted about 10 e-mail addresses with multiple names. One e-mail address had nearly 50 names (this was the source of the bogus posts so many of you observed).
So, we have options.
What are your thoughts? Are there any other suggestions?
"What are your thoughts?"
All of the other forums I participate in allow 'free' browsing, but require login to post. Having to login here wouldn't trouble me in the least.
I am also a moderator of one toolchain vendor's forums where we had one sub-forum that did not require logins. It got hit by the spammers other riffraff until I convinced the vendor at least try limiting that sub-forum too. It's a much nicer place to go now and the vendor has not made a peep about opening it up again.
All of the other forums I participate in allow 'free' browsing, but require login to post. Having to login here wouldn't trouble me in the least. all fora (forums - let's not start arguing this) I participate in feature the option of 'automatic login' (this 'cleaning lady' has no idea whether that is a forum feature or a web feature or Gatesian) and the 'effort' of once in your lifetime to enter name and password etc is, of course, way too much to bear. If anyone do not 'get' that "way too much to bear" is irony, they are now informed.
One final thought: Craig has the "protected e-mail function", that is a very nice feature.
PS: cleaning ladies "do not do windows"
