Founder looking at custom SoC to reduce BOM costs

Hey everyone,

I am a founder of a company in New Zealand looking to launch a high-volume product in the residential space. We face a critical BOM price-point for scale uptake and adoption that needs to be met for economic viability. I see custom SoC design as a no-brainer for a variety of reasons, however, I am having trouble understanding the process, and resources to go from where we are currently (POC discrete design) to a finished chip.

The big question I have is how, and is it a good idea to be running the designs in parallel? Ie a discrete design and a chip design. If anyone has any knowledge of the concept to production whilst running a parallel track it would be great to garner any insights. Trying to fumble my way around in the dark here.

We are designing on STM32L562.

Also I am not a technologist but learning day by day so please excuse any poor choice of words :)

Thanks everyone!
