An Enhanced Arm DesignStart for Academia

The announcement of an enhanced DesignStart offering last June added Cortex-M3 to the previous offering, and made it possible to get instant access to Arm IP, for the broadest range of embedded devices.

With the recent updates to the DesignStart announced at the Arm Research Summit, Arm is making it even simpler for academics to access Arm IP and foster an open, collaborative teaching and research environment using the most proven IP and benefiting from the #1 ecosystem. We want to help more researchers like Professor Andrew Kahng of the University of California San Diego (UCSD).

Easy Access to Arm CPUs

DesignStart for Academia offers easy access to the Cortex-M0 and Cortex-M3:

  • Teaching – DesignStart Eval enables professors and students to teach and learn using the two most-shipped Arm processors. Access is instant and completely free: with only a quick registration on DesignStart Eval and a click-through EULA, the IP is ready for download. Professors and students can access the full subsystem RTL and a fixed-configuration, synthesizable processor RTL.
    Perfect pairing to the DesignStart Eval, professors and educators can request access to the SoC Design Education Kit, which includes lecture slides, lab manuals, and project code with solutions. This set of resources provides the perfect foundation for an SoC design university course for 10 to 14 weeks. The current course is based on Cortex-M0 DesignStart Eval; in the next couple of weeks a similar course based on Cortex-M3 DesignStart Eval will be available as well!
  • Research – DesignStart Pro Academic is built specifically for researchers to quickly get started on their project using full Arm products, including full processor and subsystem RTL. Access is web-based and completely free: just complete a quick registration on the DesignStart university webpage, followed by a short questionnaire about your research project. IP access is typically approved after a few working days, allowing you to agree a click-through EULA and download! The EULA enables manufacturing to up to a 1000 units for research purposes, and allows you to engage with third parties to manufacture, package, and test the resulting integrated chip.

  • Commercialization – for researches and professors that are working on a commercial application, DesignStart Pro offers the perfect solution to obtain a fast-access license with no upfront fee, only a success-based royalty model with the first 1000 units royalty-free. Similar to DesignStart Pro Academic, simply register on the DesignStart university webpage and sign the contract (must be signed by someone that has the legal entitlement within the university or startup).
