In-system-programing (ISP)

I have question regarding a 8051 based
ISP type processor. Can I used the free
ISP software which can be downloaded from
Philips website such as WinISP or FlashMagic
to program ANY other manufacture 8051
chips (such as Windbond, Atmel etc ..)?

I am tired of having to bring my bulky
programmer wherever I go !!

We are using Winbond 8052 (W87E516) chip.
I am just curios if I can use the softwares
mentioned above to program the chip form
my Windows based PC.

Thanks for your help

  • Jon,

I couldn't see a link to add this directly, so please excuse me mentioning it here.

Although the Triscend E5 devices don't have on-chip Flash, they do support in-system programming of external Flash.
This support is included in the free FastChip download (a full FastChip licence is not required).

See also the excellent [1] Application Note 159:

[1] A totally unbiassed opinion, of course! ;-)

while Philips are one of the most liberal in support (Atmel is freely discussed in the Philips forum) two things go against you:
    1) the ISP download algorithm is different from chip to chip.
    2) I doubt Philips will pay to have their programs updated to handle competitors product.
    3) Winbond make cheap chips, expet cheap support.
