  • Lomas,

I would recommend using another embedded controller with a free evaluation board. I would start with an ATmega or ATtiny chip from Atmel and use their Atmel Studio tool, which is free. Keil does have it's perks but from a starters standpoint (I think that's what you said your situation was), Keil and 8051 are probably the wrong way to go (especially if you don't have a legit copy).

You can get free samples as well as their evaluation software from Atmel's website:
    www.atmel.com/default.aspx

Atmel also has a very helpful community with many tutorials here:
    www.avrfreaks.net/index.php

If you can use an evaluation version from Keil, you will be space limited but can still use it legally but, realistically, the community here is much rougher and tutorials are harder to come by. I wouldn't recommend for anyone to start with Keil/8051 but that's just me.

So to sum it up, if you're trying to learn Embedded Systems, I would definitely not start here. Good luck!

Note: If you are not a beginner and are comfortable working with Keil/8051, disregard this post . . . :p

  • Hi Lomas Subedi,

Since you have a X86 machine for Windows 8, if it is not secured by something like Secure Boot, then you should be able to install another OS on it.

Windows 8 is not good for MCU software development, at this moment.

I come from Taiwan, an island in Asia. Taiwan was (is?) a kingdom of pirate. We are always on the list of "Section 301 of the United States Trade Act".

  • China's ZLGMCU company terminated their TKStudio IDE business due to pirated hardware, two months ago.
