Verifying and Validating Embedded C Code

Hi,

To verify the Embedded C (8 bit) code what are the things to be considered. Any special tools avaliable for testing Embedded code....or only simulatuion tools are enough....what are the things need to be seen during verifying...and also provide me tips for code optimization....
