Compiler crash uVision V3.54

Hi All

I have started with an evaluation version received with Luminary Micro kit.

Installed on 2 different PCs (Vista and XP) in the default location C:\Keil.

When the IDE is started a pop-up comes with message that the compiler has crashed. When I try to assemble or compile (eg a demo project) it give the error "failed to execute 'BIN31\ArmAsm'" or "failed to execute 'BIN31\ArmCC'".

The paths to BIN31 are correct and the exes are there.

If I go to c:\keil\ARM\BIN31 I can try to execute the exes from the command line. armasm seems OK - it gives some build information.
armcc crashes with the same message as when uVision starts.

I tried reinstalling a couple of times. I tried installing from a different CD source. The result is however always the same.

Is this something to do with needing to install an evaluation license (I didn't see anything in the docs). Is it a problem with me having something else installed on the PC - eg. I have GCC on both.

Any tips- I am out of ideas...

Regards

Mark

  • have you solved the problem yet?bacause i've been suffering the same one for a couple of weeks and i'm getting crazy.thank u

  • Hi

No I didn't - I never got this working with the mentioned Keil version.
But I managed to get hold of a V3.62c version and this worked correctly - no problems at all. The one on the CD was simply useless...

  • @ Mark

Where did you manage to find v 3.62c? Can you provide a link to help the rest of us out?

    Thanks,
    Erik

  • Hi Erik

At the time I just went to the Keil web site and downloaded the evaluation: www.keil.com/.../arm.htm

That was 3.62c it seems (this is what shows up in the help menu). If I check there today it says 3.40 so I don't know what to believe. Maybe they have switched back to an older version for evaluation of perhaps the numbering displayed when downloading doesn't match the number in the actual package (?).

    regards

  • Hi Mark,

    > Any tips- I am out of ideas...
I had a same problem yesterday when I tried to install µVision3.53 on my new Laptop. 2 licences of this version we bought 2 years ago for one of the projects which I should finish now. At first I thought that problem has to do with SP3 of WinXP. But after I tried to install the µVision on Laptop with SP2 where µVision was last year installed and I got a same problem, for me was clear - problem is in MDK. And most interesting is that when I on the Laptop with SP3 set the date back on 2007 the problem was gone!

    Answer from Keil-Support:
"if PSN XXXX-XXXX-XXXX is the one you used, you must extend your support and maintenance to use the latest version because the support already expired in August 2008.
Please contact your local distributor for a quote regarding the support and maintenance update for your PSN."

It seems to be that this problem is not just a bug, but integrated in MDK to sell the updates.

For me is clear: Keil is not good choice for future projects :-(

    Best Regards,
    Sergey

  • Hi Sergey

I am sorry to hear about your problems.
If possible I would try to keep using your old PC for your project, avoiding the need to move.

Don't know where the problems come from - mine looked like a dud version since newer ones were OK. Generally (apart from the bad version on CD) I found Keil easy to install and use. Basically good SW, but rather expensive and the evaluation version rather too restrictive to convince.

  • Hi Mark,

    > If possible I would try to keep using your old PC for your project, avoiding the need to move.

I already was thinking about this :-) But from April I'll work for a while outside of firma and sometimes will come here. Because of this I realy need laptop :)

    > Basically good SW, but rather expensive
I'm impressed by the software too. But the politic of Keil makes completly other build to their product. I don't know how long your work with Keil and in which area. But just imagine that we develop here one medical device and almost finished our qualifications... And now we should update our compiler. This means for me exploded costs of project! Since a lot of tests should be repeated. And nobody worries in Keil that their product has a problem (as I see now it was not a bug, it is integrated by developers problem) and they should help... Answer from them:"We wanna money, buy update"!!!!

Last year I had some problems with their licencing model which cost me some ours of emails, now with other problem again... Be carefull with Keil :-)

And after I wrote my first message today I did following: Set date at my brand new Laptop on August 2007, start uVision (it starts without crashing problem), register it at Keil-Licence server, set date back to 2009, work with my project without that problem.

I hope my expirience helps your, if Keil integrated such problem in new versions of their products

    Have a nice day :)
    Good luck
    Sergey
