Hi all
Are there any 8051 JTAG based boards ?
I want to avoid the expensive ICEs and programmers .
Thanks Elico
all SILabs devboards. (at least f0, f1 and f2)
Erik
I don't think SiLabs is actually JTAG - is it?
There are not many 8051s with on-board debug and, of the ones that do have it, it's likely to use a proprietary interface, rather than JTAG.
SiLabs has already been mentioned;
Atmel have some;
Wiznet have some.
Apart from on-chip debug, there are plenty of 8051s that are In-System Programmable (ISP) - so programmers are not required.
If JTAG (or just on-chip debug) is your key concern, have you considered ARM Cortex-M0/3...?
Some Silabs devices have JTAG, some have proprietary C2 debug interface.
What is proprietary interface ?
Elico
Proprietary interface = they have invented their own solution.

"but it still serves your purpuse ($35 for the dongle to load/debug)"
Depends on what that purpose was. One reason for actually wanting/needing JTAG would be if the factory is expected to interact with this chip and other chips using existing JTAG equipment.

it is not, the OP stated in his first post: "I want to avoid the expensive ICEs and programmers"
Yes, but that sentence doesn't say that "expensive ICEs and programmers" are the only single reason.
Having a chip with JTAG support means that you can decide to save an expensive programmer at the factory too, you know ;)
save an expensive programmer
everything is relative, for some $35 is expensive, for others not.
But are that $35 thingy good for factory testing and factory production programming?
I have used them for both with no problem. The only 'issue' is that the load is a bit slower than the load of other chips in a parrallel programme. Anyhow, when production ramped up, we ordered them pre-programmed.
