SAM3 micro becomes a bit hotter than SAM7

I'm trying to replace my AT91SAM7S256 with SAM3S8B micro controller which is sitting on my board. I feel like when I connect my board to USB port and use HID class, my SAM3 micro becomes a bit hotter than SAM7 micro. But I'm not sure that it is normal or abnormal.

  • How much is "a bit"?!
No 2 chips are identical: Do you mave more than one of the "original" board - to see what the "normal" variance between individual devices was there...?

Are the new & old in same physically-sized packages? A physically smaller package could mean more Watts per square metre - so higher temperature...?

Does the newer device have on-chip regulators, or other extra features to disipate more power internally...?
