In terms: You should read the datasheets for the chips, and you should read the Philips documentation about I2C. Then you should implement, test, document and report. That is what is expected from your college project.
Another thing to look into is that broken keyboard of yours - seems the caps-lock key can't be trusted.
Note that "Philips" is now (and has been for some years) NXP
But lots of the best stuff still has the name Philips on the pages - they haven't bothered to make new revisions.
