We have a bootloader residing in 0800 0000 to 0801 ffff and an app residing in 0802 0000 to 0807 ffff
how can it be that with some versions of the bootloader I get flash erase and/or flash downkoad timeouts when JTAG loading the app which resides in a toally different part of memory?

What if you erase the chip entirely and _only_ program the application? Are you sure it is related to the presence of the bootloader?

"a total erase (at least that is what I believe flash/erase is) des not fix it."
