Did you see the web page last night? It had a pic of a webserver and I started to dream. Could I make a webserver small enough to go into a box? So I think this will be my project.
Do you want to help? Wonder if we could mod it later, perhaps add USB external drive instead of SD. Add services to the OS, like server administration? Perhaps Mail or ftp the file to the box and have it auto download.
Any other ideas?
"Did you see the web page last night?
What web page?
It may have escaped your notice, but there's a few more than just one page on the internet! Which one are you talking about?!
"Could I make a webserver small enough to go into a box?"
I don't know about your capabilities, but plenty of other people have certainly done it! The largest part is the RJ45 jack!
"Do you want to help?"
I think google can give all the help you need!
"Wonder if we could mod it later, perhaps add USB external drive instead of SD." Yes, this has also been done.
"Add services to the OS"
What OS? You don't need an OS to do this!
"Perhaps Mail or ftp the file to the box and have it auto download."
Yes, all perfectly possible - plenty of prior art
You could fit anything you want into a box.
All you need to do is specify a large enough box.
"Did you see the web page last night?"
Yes. My prediction for 2010 is that this year the Internet will break through that one new web page per day publishing barrier.
Here's the page that was published a few days ago:
http://beagleboard.org/
I remember seeing these back about 2001: www.netmedia.com/.../sp1.html
Nowadays, there are plenty of chips with on-board ethernet MAC and PHY that could do it easily.
And modules little larger than a standard RJ45 jack...
