I also have a question. My company are developing a device that must be on a stand alone base where info will be recieved via the GSM network. All info will be buffered on the device and the connected to the USB port of a PC. I only have RS232 capabillities on the design and would like to add a FTDI chip USB2RS232 chip on the design to addopt the 2. Can someone please point me in the correct direction. Not all PC's have RS232, but all have USB I am not allowed to open any case to add PCI cards and adding the USB2RS232 into my design will be the cheaper option. Where do I start to look for a CHIP that can do this conversion?
You've already mentioned FTDI:

Your question suggests that you have little or no experience in this area, so I would recommend that you particularly look at their ready-made cable assemblies:

and modules:

Others to look at include Silicon Labs.
And Google "USB Serial Bridge".
