Through experiencwe, I have learned that "new and improved" means 'worse'

It's easy to get into that mindset.
But ... I experienced one of the very early releases of Keil's C51 compiler (I think back in about 1989) and I can say that has definitely improved since then. At the time I gave up on it because the compiler produced code something like:
PUSH ACC .. (function body) .. RET
Yes, it has definitely improved since then.
