Yes. Pick a MCU that has USB host functionality built in, or at least USB2Go. That excludes pretty much any '51 derivative.
Or, pick a different storage medium. MMC/SD cards or CF cards are much less complex than anything that attaches to USB.
"USB key" is an ambiguous word. Is it a USB memory - mass-storage class, or smart card - CCID, or U3 smart drive, or any other class?
Read out the descriptors of the device using USBView and confirm the class implemented on it.

When it is a mass-storage, these ready-made host controllers are the easy way.
