The original spelling of the word Syntax was indeed spelled "Sintax," and was basically intended to tax people who couldn't spell. This is why it is misspelled. (This has nothing to do with ladies of the night and it is a bit disturbing to know where your mind is).
Computers treat 'misspelled' instructions as "illegal." They are considered an affront to the strict programming language designers, and hence it is immoral to request the execution of these violations of the sacred programming languages. The "sin" of misspelling clearly has to be dealt with.
Since it has been proven difficult to pass clean legislation against misspelling computer instructions, Microsoft and other software vendors, wanted to discourage this behavior through taxation. They figured the proceeds would make up for any customer support expenses.
A bitter argument still rages about what the government's cut should be on this revenue stream. So, in the mean time, software vendors like to inform the user as often as they can about this tax. They figure we'll get used to seeing this little tax reminder, and when the legislation finally passes, we'll accept it more easily. (NOTE: Offshore Syntax shelters have already been established by Intuit).
