the story of CodeWright
a group of great people made an excellent editor called 'brief' (anyone remember that one?).
Borland got upset that so many stated that 'brief' was much better than the pitiful Borland editor and the solution was to buy the company that made 'brief' and discontinue 'brief'.
Some of the people from 'brief' then started to make CodeWright with all that 'brief' could and more.
Borland got upset that so many stated that CodeWright was much better than the pitiful Borland editor and the solution was to buy the company that made CodeWright and discontinue CodeWright.
That created such an uproar that Borland started shipping it again, but AFAIK they have now reverted to their old habits and discontinued it again.
PS: if you want the, in my opinion, best editor ever, Amazon has 3 left - hurry.
Erik,
I've been trying to ignore this quite bizarre thread, but you fired up my interest!
I remember Brief - Originally written by a company called UnderWare (or rather, at the time I bought a copy, it was them). I always thought the naming was a lovely pun!
For years, I've been wanting an editor that was as comfortable to use as Brief. I've tried quite a few: amongst them one called Crisp which has pretty good Brief emulation and recently SlickEdit which is not so good.
For a reason I can't remember, I decided not to follow up on CodeWright.
Question - Is it really as close to Brief as is suggested? By that, I mean, does it have very good emulation of the original Brief key combinations or does it approximate some?
David.
In conjunction with a job change I lost my beloved brief (I am an ardent non-bootlegger). Thus I started with CodeWright, oh how long ago was that?, using brief emulation for a while (I do not recall any problems). Then I worked with someone that used CodeWright in 'native mode' and, for fun, we did a couple of things with CodeWright and brief we actually found and used a copy of brief.
Even old dogs can learn new tricks and I switched to CodeWright in 'native mode' because I got convinced it was better (could do all brief could and more).
Since then I have only fond memories of brief and have forgotten more than I ever knew about it.
