Using google, I was able to find at least some parts of the circuits that make up an ECG.
From your description, it is not clear what exactly you want to build. How many ECG electrodes (a simple 2- or 3-lead ECG ? A full-blown 12-lead ECG ?) ? Do you need respiration measurements ? What sampling rate (ADC and output) are you looking for ? Does it need to be defibrillator-proof ? Do you want to detect electrode status (connected/disconnected) ? What kind of wireless link are you looking for (Bluetooth ? ZigBee ? WLAN ? Cellphone ?) ? What power source is it supposed to run with (AA batteries ? LiIon batteries ?) ? What microcontroller ?
You should try to answer these questions (and others that I didn't think of) very specifically, and maybe then you can start looking for circuits or hire a consultant.

We considered doing something like that, but it involved sticking a really large adhesive patch to the chest of the patient. Patient feedback was generally negativ,e and downright abysmal after removing (i.e. ripping off) the patch.
I think you're assuming that his "ecg" means electrocardiogram?
The probability is quite high, but even that is open to doubt...!
He doesn't really seem that interested now, anyhow.

That was an attempt at an educated guess. Or maybe I was just reacting to a buzzword since I hear it several times a day at work. :)

Probably not, but if you're lucky and get a circuit diagram, you can start asking for the source code to run the uC with, too.
