Looking for video integration of 8051 to CRT/LCD via serial port

I've been taking a hard look at the SV2000 Video IC for serial to composite video which is very very easy to impliment. The problem is that it is only monochrome, limited font, and 9600 baud, which isn't to bad for string feedback.

the primary purpose is for video feedback, so if switch one goes active, then the video screen displays "switch one activated" and a carriage return, and next output dialog etc. Using an LCD is not or LED displays will not work, it has to be a crt/lcd with composite video.

I'm looking for something that could replace that using a similiar method. I would like it to be in color, programmable, and 256 color. I can't seem to find anything that is already integrated as a package IC that can be programmed serially. I don't need Svid or RBG, but wouldn't dismiss it either.

I don't want to reinvent the wheel or have to recode any of my modules to support it. I don't want any BGA devices or fine pitch components since most of this is proof of concept. I'm not doing graphics, but would like to be able to control fore and background of the CRT/LCD.

I've combed google and many 8051 sites and the only real thing is the 8052.com site with a limited version and overly complicated approach. Anyone have a suggestion as to what direction or IC would do this job easily and effectively? Anyone ever done this? Composite video is what most people have and would make things very easy for compatibility.

Thank you

Chris
