8051: How to choose a development tool?

How you choose a development tool for your a 8051 device? Assume that you've got one of the simpler ones without any fancy add-ons like CAN or USB. The big players seem to be Keil, Raisonance, IAR systems, and Crossware (pretty much in that order) -- these guys seem to have their own IDE and all the tools to go with (assembler, compiler, debugger, in-system debugger) without linking to 3rd parties for help. How do you choose from them?

  • Andrew;
    This being a Keil website you can see we are biased to Keil. I have Keil and IAR for ARM and 80C51. I seldom use IAR at any time.
    Keil tools makes the tightest code, the simplest interface and the most tools in any tool set. That is, the full peripherial simulator, the ability to creat additional debugger intefaces, the most JTAG drivers, the most flash drivers, etc.
    I suggest that you download the eval tools from Keil and IAR and run your own tests. As we say here in my part of the country. The proof of the pudding is in the eating.
    And the proof of the tools is in the use.
    I know nothing of the other tools that you mentioned.
