Hi! Is it possible to protect a sector by software to protect important information and unprotect it again in software to read or update this information? I'm using an AMD Flash AM29F200! Thanks for your answers! Robert
A glance at the data sheet seems to indicate to me that this particular part does not support sector protection and unprotection purely via software. A flash programmer (with high voltages on Vid and manipulation of the control pins) is required to protect the part. Even the "temporary unprotection" requires some hardware intervention (Vid on the RESET pin). ("Spansion"? What were they thinking? I'd much rather buy from AMD or Fujitsu than "Spansion". And now I've lost a second source for my parts, since I can only list the one company instead of two separate ones.) I know Atmel has some parts that support a sector lock via software command -- but the one I happen to be familiar with will only unlock after a chip reset, and not via a command. That may be a little inconvenient for your application. I don't know of any parts that lock and unlock freely via software off the top of my head, but they're probably out there.
