I currently teach an embedded systems class at University of Texas at Tyler using MDK 5.43 IDE environment and STM32L476 board and students do several projects on the Cortex M4 based platform under limited academic license (32K executable max).
Planning for the future I was curious about whether I need to look into transitioning the projects to MDK v6 using VSCode.
Is there any guidance based on the ARM roadmap?
Thoughts? Recommendations?
I think you should start to migrate your MDK 5 projects to MDK 6 with its VS Code based Keil Studio. In our manual, we have one chapter that explains how to do that:

Note: You can also use the so-called Community Edition license for non-commercial projects (like Universities) which does not have a 32K code size limit. Please see:

Thanks - I will try this out shortly. Quick question about the Community Edition license - will each student in my class have to register on the ARM community website for obtaining a license code or is it automatic?
No, there is no developer.arm.com account necessary to register an MDK 6 Community Edition. Please see this page for more details:
