Arm Education is announcing the launch of our first online course on the edX platform - Embedded Systems Essentials with Arm: Getting started.

Dr. Khaled Benkrid, Senior Director, Education, and Research: “This online course from Arm Education is the first in a series of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) on edX. They are designed to unleash the potential of students, aspiring and practicing engineers, and the wider global learner community, with free-to-access practical knowledge and skills in computer science and engineering. Working with both academics and practitioners, we cover theory fundamentals and demonstrate applicability through state-of-the-art technologies and tools from the vast Arm ecosystem. The knowledge and skills you learn in these courses have direct applicability in our everyday lives.”

Anant Agarwal, edX Founder and CEO: “edX is committed to increasing access to education, and we are thrilled that Arm Education is joining our community to offer courses and programs in cutting-edge topics in computer science and engineering. As world leaders in developing the technology to power today’s computing revolution, their first course in embedded systems introduce the fundamentals of this technology. I look forward to working together to bring this content to our 33 million learners.”

The course will go live on September 15th. You can find out more about the course here.

Background

In a previous blog post, we mentioned the importance of collaborative efforts between education providers and industry in creating an educational ecosystem focused towards training the next generation of engineers.

In fact, this has been the key foundational principle driving the activities of Arm Education.

Our vision is to play a leading role in bridging the skills gap in engineering and computer science. We aim to do this by:

  • Creating an environment where industry can contribute to the education of the next generation of engineers through the creation of up-to-date and industry relevant educational materials.
  • Creating affordable and easy to understand content that lowers entry barriers into the subject
  • Attracting new participants and increasing diversity in engineering with these accessible learning materials.

We have made great strides already, and we would encourage you to review the materials we have created for university educators, students, and early career professionals here.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, there is is an increased sense of urgency in delivering our mission. Now, many learners are looking to online platforms to complete their education or supplement their qualifications with additional skills.

Why Embedded Systems?

In his Fifth Wave of Computing blog, Arm’s CEO Simon Segars explains how the convergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI), 5G and the IoT will have a profound impact on society. These technologies have the potential to make the world more efficient and sustainable place by driving innovation in key areas including healthcare, automotive design and smart infrastructure. An intended consequence of this new wave of computing is a significant rise in the number of smart and connected devices taking advantage of these technologies.

This is where Embedded Systems comes in.

From the mobile, wearable, and smart devices of today to the AI  and 5G powered IoT devices  of the near future, embedded systems are the building blocks of our connected world.  As  a result, it is crucial that next generation of engineers have a thorough understanding of how to rapidly build and deploy a modern embedded system solution.

The Course

Our Embedded Systems Essentials with Arm: Getting Started course has been designed to  cover  the fundamentals of the subject, enabling learners to develop industry relevant skills.

The course has been created by experienced engineers from Arm and academia, and is aimed at student engineers looking to enhance their knowledge of:

  • Embedded systems and their importance in modern computing applications
  • Industry standard Arm-based microcontroller architecture, their features and programming models.

To get started quickly, the course materials include access to the Mbed simulator, which learners can download directly onto their computer. No additional hardware is required. Mbed is one of the key tools Arm has to help developers quickly design hardware and program applications for embedded systems, specifically for use in IoT.

Once completed, this course provides students with the skills to utilize the Mbed platform and its architecture as the basis for rapid embedded system development.

Access to the course is free on the edX platform. Although, you also have the option to purchase a Verified Certificate which allows you to access graded assignments and when you pass the course, a certificate which you can share on your Linkedin profile.

About edX
