The Arm Research Summit originated in 2016, Cambridge, UK, engaging 216 delegates from 82 different organizations across academia and industry. The latest Summit saw that 374 delegates enjoy the first ever US-based Summit in Austin, TX, reflecting a 209% attendance growth in four years. Not only does this reflect the consistent quality of the program through the years, but emphasizes the want of researchers, academics and industry experts to gather to debate and discover tomorrow’s technologies. 2020 will see that the fifth anniversary of the Arm Research Summit take place back in Cambridge, with the theme ‘Global Technology Challenges: A Sustainable, Secure Future for Society’. But where and how did the Summit begin and what does it look like now?
216 Delegates | 82 Institutions | 9 Keynotes | 70 Talks | 21 Posters
The first Arm Research Summit brought our idea of a research-based conference to life, giving academics and researchers a platform to present their projects and findings with peers in computing. Our research teams noted that while there were a range of academic conferences and events, there were none that focused on the latest technology developments across a broad spectrum. Most required formal research papers, limiting the opportunities for researchers to present exciting early-stage research which could inspire their peers or start new collaborative projects. The two-day program covered topics in hardware accelerators, microarchitecture, security and much more in the form of presentations, posters, workshops, and demos. The vibrant audience and the range of thoughtful questions asked were reported to be the highlight of 2016, steering the direction of future Summits.

In the year that introduced paying for things with your face, practical quantum computers and self-driving trucks1, the 2017 Summit hosted inspirational and informative demos, ranging from Pepper to virtual reality technology. With the aim of talking about future trends, disruptive technologies and their impact, the second Arm Research Summit attracted more delegates of contrasting backgrounds. This interactive Summit debuted workshops in tracked sessions and demos outside of presentations. Delegates were not only able to share ideas, but also to foster connections in and around the industry. With a new Cambridge college as a venue to account for the increased delegate numbers, 2017 was a significant year of growth for the Summit. Attendees were inspired to enhance their research projects and engage with even more potential collaborators in and around their respective fields.

Creating a truly connected world not only affects technology, but also has social, political, and ethical impact, presenting incredible opportunities alongside significant threats. Our three high-profile keynote speakers delivered engaging, thought provoking talks on this theme. Mike Muller spoke about where technology began and what is next, Haiyan Zhang spoke on empathy and insight in new technology thinking, and Yungang Bao explored revolutionary computer architecture. The keynotes set the tone for each day, encouraging innovation across all fields to create a connected ecosystem. 2018 was our most varied Summit in terms of presentation tracks and workshops, giving delegates the opportunity to discover everything from flexible electronics for biotechnology and the Internet of Things (IoT), to software tools and vectorization.
The 2018 Summit also introduced the Best Poster award, recognising delegates for their inspirational, and influential work. Amna Shahab delivered a thought-provoking poster on DRAM cache, representing the University of Edinburgh. We are continuing with this award for the 2020 Summit, so don't miss your chance to win Best Poster or Talk by registering your interest now! 2019 was an exciting year, with the first US Summit taking place in Austin, TX, also the home of a significant proportion of the Arm Research group. This year emphasized the importance of cross-disciplinary collaboration in addressing future and ever more complex computing challenges. And welcoming plenty of new delegates thanks to the US location, we also saw a significant increase in student attendance and government attendees, making for continuous lively discussion over the three days. As with all previous Summits, the quality of content was highly rated, in particular Rich Wolski’s keynote, ‘Devices-as-Services and The New Internet as a Platform of Things’. If you missed the 2019 event, you can watch the other keynote and panel sessions, and read what you missed.
Staying true to its purpose of inspiring innovation in academic research, this Summit also included the exciting announcement of Arm Flexible Access for Research from the Arm Research Enablement team. The program opens the doors for researchers to access a wider than ever portfolio of Arm IP, support, tools and training, enabling technology leaders to experiment and innovate more easily than ever before.
