“Probably the best phone you can get right now” – Mali-G76 in the new Huawei Mate 20 Pro

The new Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro have been receiving extremely positive reviews from top tech media so far. In its review of the Mate 20 Pro, Android Authority concludes that the device is “probably the best phone you can get right now.” Other reviews are just as glowing. The Guardian in the UK describes the Huawei Mate 20 Pro as “cutting edge brilliance”, Mashable states that the phone is “Android’s dark horse champion”, while Gizmodo boldly exclaims “finally a phone that stands out for all the right reasons.” At the heart of the phone’s success are the exceptional performance and battery life, with the Arm Mali-G76 GPU helping it to achieve phenomenal gains in these two areas.

Long battery life

The long battery life is proclaimed by Android Authority as “the highlight”, with the Huawei Mate 20 Pro offering the largest battery of any mainstream device. Testing the smartphone with heavier usage – which included gaming, running benchmarks and YouTube streaming – there were six to seven hours of screen-on time. According to Android Authority, this means that regular users will probably only need to charge every two or two and a half days. Even with regular gaming and video streaming, users could still get a day out of it. The fast charging was another notable feature of the device – from zero to 70 percent in 30 minutes.

Fast performance

The Android Authority review also noted the fast performance of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, especially during gaming and general use. The phone has plenty of features, which makes the performance even more impressive, with reviewers noting no significant time lags using the device. A column in Forbes even calls the Huawei Mate 20 Pro “the most feature packed phone of 2018.” This includes triple-camera sensors, an expansive OLED screen and a number of ML-based features, including in-display fingerprint sensor, real-time photo manipulation and 3D face unlock system, to name a few.

Arm Mali-G76 in the Huawei Mate 20 Pro

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro uses the Mali-G76, Arm’s latest premium GPU, which enables some of the performance and battery life benefits. A key feature of the Mali-G76 is its ability to combine performance and efficiency for the best possible user experience. It also allows users to do more on-the-go with the better-than-ever battery life enabling longer sustained mobile gaming sessions. Other emerging use cases such as AR and ML-based features are more viable than they have ever been.

Looking at the vital statistics, the GPU delivers 30 percent more performance density, 30 percent more energy efficiency, and up to 2.7x ML improvements when compared to Mali-G72 in the same semiconductor process. Using cutting edge technology such as 7nm in the HiSilicon Kirin 980 chipset brings further benefits to the Mate 20 Pro, with Huawei claiming that the Mali-G76 GPU improves performance by 46 percent and energy efficiency by 178 percent, while working seamlessly with its innovative AI frequency modulation scheduling technology.

Transforming the user experience

The Huawei Mate Pro 20 is an early adopter of the Mali-G76 – which was only recently launched in May 2018 as part the new suite of IP for premium mobile experiences – but the device is reaping the benefits through the exceptional performance and battery life. This could be just the start of new mobile devices coming to market that transform the user experience, allowing people to do a lot more with their smartphones on-the-go.
