Arm at GDC 2018

The world's largest Game Developer Conference (GDC) is held in San Francisco from the 19th to 23rd of March, and we're starting to get excited to showcase some of the great projects we are working on to help developers create amazing applications and games running on Arm IP.

So, for those of you who may not be aware of what does Arm does at GDC, or why Arm cares so much about game developers, let us fill you in!

For more than 25 years Arm technology has powered some of the most iconic gaming devices, from handheld retro 2D gaming to high fidelity gaming on the newest premium smartphones. As current trends suggest, mobile gaming is the big future money maker for the industry.The evolution of mobile gaming over the past decade has led to mobile becoming the largest and most valuable segment of the global gaming market. GDC is the world's largest professional game industry event. Join game designers, programmers, artists, producers and business professionals for 5 days of unparalleled education, inspiration and networking for the global game development community.

At GDC we are showcasing some of the gaming technology made possible by Arm. These devices have played an integral role in shaping the current mobile gaming landscape and continues to sculpt the future of gaming. Together with our partners, we will demo and present solutions for a whole host of developer challenges.

Just a taste of what Arm is showcasing are topics such as:

  • An interactive look at the history of mobile gaming

Wednesday – March 21st

Title: Attaining post-processing effects on mobile with optimization best practices
Time: Wednesday, March 21, 11:00am – 12:00pm

Abstract: The latest advances in mobile hardware performance has brought new capabilities for high-fidelity and compelling games. With the mobile game market’s notable growth worldwide and increasing demand for AAA games; creating performant, visually-stunning content has never been so important.

In this in-depth session, Arm andNordeuswill explain how to profile your game using the Arm tools, alongside identifying and resolving pipeline bottlenecks with targeted optimization (e.g.shaders).

Using “Spellsouls: Duel of Legends” as a case study, we will look at how to optimize the rendering pipeline and budget for efficient post-processing effects such as bloom at high FPS.

Title: Achieving console-like experiences on mobile.
Time:  Wednesday, March 21, 3:30pm – 4:30pm

Abstract: The unbridled rise mobile gaming irrevocably shifted content consumption habits, quality and expectations. More and more, demands are being placed to close the gap between console and mobile for both visual fidelity and experiences. For mobile VR especially, developers are faced with the challenge of creating immersive experiences that rival consoles - on an item that fits in a pocket. In this talk, Arm and a partner will talk about how they implemented inside-out tracking using the phone camera and optimised content to achieve an experience comparable to what consoles can offer.

Abstract: The announcement of Vulkan (new generation graphics and compute API), its wide adoption by major game engines alongside the latest mobile GPUs, have ushered in an era in which high-fidelity graphics with complex content aren’t restricted to just PC gaming anymore.

In this in-depth session, Arm and Samsung will explain how to fully avail of Vulkan and develop even the most demanding content using validation layers, as well as optimize on the Mali GPU architecture with supporting Arm tools likePerfDoc, Mali Graphics Debugger and DS-5 Streamline. Lastly, it will show practical examples from some of the world’s leading mobile titles.
