Arm and OpenGCC announce ServerReady test lab in China

Chinese version: Arm和OpenGCC宣布在中国成立ServerReady测试实验室

This week, Arm and Open Green Computing Consortium (OpenGCC) are announcing the formation of the OpenGCC ServerReady joint test lab, in China. The partnership means OpenGCC will establish ServerReady certification in China for Arm-based infrastructure devices – from cloud to edge – aiming to grow standard operating system deployment.

Green Computing Consortium was founded in 2016 to promote the use of power-efficient infrastructure systems, based on Arm architecture. The consortium, led by key industry players, has and will continue to collaborate on platform standards and compliance testing. At a time when global environmental issues are of increasing concern, both the input from the Green Computing Consortium, aiming to make the computing industry sustainable, and the proven energy efficiency of Arm-based processors, are key benefits to the data center, hyperscaler, and other server industries.

The announcement follows the ServerReady and OpenEdge Summit held in Haikou, China, where key ecosystem players openly discuss and collaborate on industry standards and future technologies for the infrastructure market. The event includes key hyperscalers (Alibaba, Baidu, Bytedance, Meituan, Microsoft, Tencent), silicon providers (Ampere, HiSilicon, Marvel, NXP, Phytium), service providers (China Mobile, Sanfor), OEMs/ODMs (Gigabyte, Great Wall, H3C, HPE, Huawei, Lenovo, ZTE), OSVs (Tianjin Kylin, Microsoft), firmware vendors (AMI, Byosoft, ZD Tech), Android in cloud (Red Finger, Runtronic), and memory vendors (Micron, Micronc, SK Hynix).

TechCon 2018 saw the launch of Arm Neoverse and the Arm ServerReady certification program. At this year’s event, discussions expanded from cloud to edge, with a focus on ensuring a cloud-native experience across a diverse and secure edge ecosystem. In line with this, Arm announced Project Cassini. A collaborative initiative that will develop platform standards and reference systems that establish a cloud-native software experience for a secure infrastructure edge. To bring a level of standardization to edge, Arm will collaborate with silicon partners and ODMs on reference systems. The ServerReady specification may be adapted to take this into account in future.

In addition to the publication of the OpenGCC Server Technical Standards Report, Server Base Boot Requirements, Server Base System Architecture specifications, and the OpenGCC Best Application Solutions, OpenGCC has also established a strategic alliance with the Edge Computing Consortium (ECC) in China. This expansion of coverage from cloud to edge is also supported by the foundation of Guizhou Cloud. The world’s first cloud provider that has systems using four server SoC providers. These collaborations are central to the development of one global standard and will act as a huge enabler, not just for China, but for the global market.

Overall, OpenGCC is facilitating some major developments in cloud to edge computing and we proudly welcome the support and effort of our partners within this collaborative group. China is a key focus for Arm and the open, neutral and international-oriented nature of OpenGCC perfectly positions it to conduct ServerReady testing and certification locally.
