Announcing Arm Leading Edge: pushing the limits of rich embedded computing on Arm

Rex St. John

February 12, 2019

Today we are announcing Arm Leading Edge, a new awareness initiative to showcase the exceptional work being done by key partners to push the limits of what is possible in edge computing.

Arm Leading Edge partners, among others, are building the next generation of powerful, rich embedded solutions in the form of single-board computers and modules featuring new, high-performance Arm CPUs, GPUs, security, and AI technologies. The objective of Arm Leading Edge is to highlight the work being done by these partners to advance the state of edge computing and help developers access these capabilities more easily.

Meet Leading Edge partners at Embedded World

The first group of Arm Leading Edge partners will be presented at Embedded World in Germany this coming February 26-28. Please join us to participate in our Scavenger Hunt competition to meet the Leading Edge partners in person. We also welcome you to come and speak to us in person about Arm Leading Edge at the Arm booth in Hall 4, booth 140.

What motivated us to create Arm Leading Edge?

After traveling the world and speaking with developers of all types, we have learned that the proliferation of more powerful heterogeneous solutions (that combine many Arm cores together) is driving tremendous amounts of innovation at the edge. Developers of all types are adopting these platforms to build drones, autonomous vehicles, industrial IoT gateways, digital signage, smart security cameras and much more. Single-board computers and modules are where much of this work begins. Arm Leading Edge partners are the ones creating these single-board computers and platforms, among many others, but we’ve selected this initial group as they will be showcasing their technology at Embedded World 2019 this month.

The advantage of Arm at the edge

Due to the success of the Arm architecture, the number of “edge compute” options for developers seeking to prototype a project is large. A casual search on HackerBoards.com, a library of single-board computers, reveals that 248 out of 298 boards in the database are based on Arm. We are expecting that number to grow rapidly as new, more powerful, Arm processors are combined into new edge computing solutions.

Increasingly, single-board computers and modules are enabling developers to use artificial intelligence (AI), industrial-grade security, connectivity as well as real-time control, FPGAs, ASICs and much more. Arm Leading Edge is our approach to recognize and raise awareness of these new capabilities.

What happens next?

We will be working with these key Arm Leading Edge partners on content, workshops, technical demos, prototypes and more - stay tuned!
