Steve is Chief Operating Officer at DornerWorks in Grand Rapids, MI, USA. Steve has proven expertise in safety-critical hardware and software engineering design and processes, including DO-254 and DO-178C (both to level A). Steve was the Principal Investigator for the first DornerWorks Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) federal contract, awarded by the US Navy on a project titled “Safe, Secure, and High Performance Hypervisor: A Partitioning Approach to Isolating Untrusted Software”. He is currently the PI for a DARPA SBIR regarding the seL4 microkernel.
Before joining DornerWorks, Steve was a Professor of Engineering at Calvin College. He was also the key architect for a flight-certified network protocol stack at Smiths Aerospace (now GE Aviation). He holds an MSEE from Michigan Technological University and a PhD in Computer Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has published dozens of papers on a variety of technology-related topics. Steve and his wife Pam have been married for over 30 years. They have three children and several grandchildren. Steve’s hobbies include music, app development with squishLogic, and occasional blogging on Deus Ex Machina.
