I like this message very much, ohh! what's pitiful! it's 2 years ago. but I really hope the writer or someone can send VS51.exe. thanks!

Refactor existing code making it easier to read and cheaper to maintain.
Well, a cynic would say, "If VS is so great, why would you need to add all these extras...?"
But, back to my question, that site says nothing whatsoever about what "refactoring" actually is! What does it actually mean?
It claims to make it easy - but it doesn't say what it is!
It just assumes that I want to "refactor" - it doesn't tell me why I might want to do that!
Refactoring is suppose to take variable scope into account where find/replace does not.
Maybe not. http://www.wholetomato.com/
"from where I sit, it just looks like a fancy search-and-replace to me?"
I've often thought that myself!
If it works well, then what is the reason to change it?!
What is all this "refactoring" stuff, anyhow?
from where I sit, it just looks like a fancy search-and-replace to me?
.bat was often use in DOS, though it still work well today, but you need change your mind look other
"Maybe MCU project often is a samll project..."
Quite the opposite for us.
Our projects are normally too large to be run (easily) in the simulator.
In general, an IDE does have the potential to enhance productivity.
I don't agreed, Why do people develop the Slickedit(IDE without simulator)? which called professional editor! if useless? Maybe MCU project often is a samll project, so it doesn't need too much in the modern editors(IDEs) have. however, if you want to coding with modern technolgy, you should involved refactor, but without refactor tool, I don't think you can do this process easily.
uVision isn't a really great IDE - but it still, I think, does have the potential to enhance productivity.
agreed
Of course, with any general purpose tool, you can always do better with something specifically optimised. agreed
I think your specific situation is not a general - possibly not even common - one?
People who use VS may have same situation with me, if not, maybe a burden

VS also is a tool, With much more plug-ins
So it's not so much that VS per se enhances your productivity - it's that using a familiar tool enhances your productivity.
Yes, this is a good one, I always see people using in the linux, but aslo I know it can using in the Windows. for me, I often write PC programs with VS ide, so it's good to have same develpment environment with the MCU development. I think we have a little bit digress, I just want VS51.exe or something like that.
Slickedit - Spot on :)
