__cplusplus is automatically defined when you compile using a C++
compiler.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;
This is not the case when compiled with a C compiler.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;
So you can use it to make your code compatible between C and
C++.&lt;/p&gt;
