there has been several posts lately by "identity thieves". Most other fora in this area require registration including e-mail address (which is not published). Is it time for required registration?

In general, with the advertisements and posers, I'm inclined to agree that the time for forum registration is now. Here's a quick and dirty idea.
1. User registers. 2. User received e-mail with link to confirm. 3. User clicks link and is registered. 4. Registration info stored in cookie on user's browser. 5. Login automatic if cookie found.
Registration details would include Real Name, Forum Handle, E-mail Address, Country, Password, Reminder Phrase.
Comments?

That is good.
a couple of possible enhancements:
"diaplayed ID" (real name if below included) must be unique. Otherwise I could register with my name as Andy Neil and use valid info for the rest.
Also, the 8052 requirement that "diaplayed ID" must be real name is very attractive, there is no obscene/cute/irritating 'handles' displayed.
So what have you finaly planned to do? or what are you planning to do?
We're working on it. But, we're still just collecting ideas. These things take time and careful consideration before implementation and deployment.
could you possibly trace the source for the 'ghost' posts and lock out that source?
have a look at phpBB, http://www.phpbb.com/ a heavy used forum software overall in the world, it has all what you need and is installed in a couple of hours
