I am running NT4(service pack 6) using the DOS shell cmd.exe. I am trying to invoke the C51 compiler version 5.5 (8051 Development Tools) using the gnu make utility version 3.79.1.

I have set up a simple makefile to attempt to make a single

RE: problem invoking C51 compiler from gnu make

Not sure what the compiler was - my colleague thinks it probably was DJGPP. I'm going to look into that and try using the other two ports you mentioned.

There were no error messages produced, it seemed like the thread was suddenly terminated. If I run make –d it shows everything happening as it should then the messages suddenly stop in the middle. If I pipe the debug output to file it gets all the way to the c51 test1.c command, but nothing happens and the command prompt returns.

Thanks,

The symptoms suggest that it might well be the DJGPP version, which is a *DOS* program at it very heart. You might to better with the Cygwin or MinGW32 ports.

... and maybe show actual error messages next time...

RE: problem invoking C51 compiler from gnu make

I'm not sure if mine will buy that.

RE: problem invoking C51 compiler from gnu make

Recent scientific discoveries have proven that versinos oscillate between several different versions on their way from the factory to your hard drive. The version actually captured by the bits on your disk may or may not be the same as the version originally generated. Perhaps this effect has something to do with your problem.

That's what I plan to tell my boss the next time he asks why I'm not producing as much output as expected, anyway.

RE: problem invoking C51 compiler from gnu make

yes, c51 runs fine direct from the command line, without make on NT. The version of c51 I'm using required a registration number on installation, then runs without dongles.

It seems to be the specific combination of NT, gnu make and C51 that causes the problem.

short summery:
WinNT, gnu make, C51 : failed (with strange effects)
WinNT, nmake, C51 : worked
WinNT, gnu make, gcc : worked
Win98, gnu make, C51 : worked
Win2000, gnu make, C51 : worked

regards,
