Today and Future of Intermittent Computing for Sustainable Sensing - Kasim Sinan Yildirim, University of Trento

This talk was presented at the virtual Arm Research Summit, September 9-11, 2020. This year's event explored global technology challenges across sustainability, security, and society, and attracted delegates from around the world for three days of innovative content.

Due to unpredictable energy harvesting environments, the computation intervals of batteryless sensors are interleaved by periods of power failures and recharging their energy buffers. This intermittent operation brings about challenges to the fundamental computing concepts such as consistency of data, forward progress of computation, and time management. In this talk, Kasim presents a summary of his teams latest efforts: a new kernel that enables event-driven execution on intermittent power and a new runtime that enables the porting of unmodified as well as time-sensitive legacy code to the intermittent computing platforms. He finishes the talk by speculating about a new energy-scaling processor architecture.
