The use of IoT devices is accelerating at a rapid pace, driven by the ongoing digital transformation. With the prediction of a trillion connected devices by 2035 and the growth of big data, security and energy efficiency become the most demanding requirements for the IoT end-to-end solution designs. Recognizing these requirements, Arm, Cadence, Samsung Foundry, and Sondrel collaborated to deliver the industry’s first eMRAM IoT test chip and board, Musca-S1, to help IoT designers develop IoT security easier and faster.
IoT security requires a layered approach across the device and network to protect the entire IoT network ecosystem. The Platform Security Architecture (PSA) framework enables IoT designers to make security an integral part of their design by following a four-step process: analyse, architect, implement and certify. The new PSA Certified Program allows independent assessment of the security implementation, compliance and certification.
Processing the big data resulting from the expansion of the IoT ecosystem and the “always-on” devices makes low-energy design crucial for the successful IoT deployment. Samsung Foundry’s non-volatile memory technology, Magnetoresistive Random Access Memory (MRAM), is one way to solve the energy-efficiency issue. Among the process technologies in the market, magnetic memory can replace current memories with the combination of non-volatility, high density, low latency and low leakage. In addition, it can easily scale below the 40nm process technology, giving SoC designers more flexibility to meet their memory needs based on the memory and power requirements of various and design-specific use-cases.
Musca-S1 is the first 28nm fully-depleted silicon-on-insulator (FD-SOI) embedded Magnetoresistive Random Access Memory (eMRAM) IoT test chip and board to apply Arm’s robust IoT security portfolio, including Arm’s PSA framework and Trusted Firmware-M (TF-M) reference implementation with Mbed OS to achieve PSA Certification. Musca-S1 is designed and verified by Sondrel and Cadence using the Cadence full digital tool flow, offering silicon-proven choices to IoT designers in their system-on-chip (SoC) development journey. Designers can now easily implement more secure, holistic IoT solutions, enabling them to focus on core product differentiation and accelerate time-to-market.
Based on the previous generation of IoT development platform, Musca-A1 and B1 test chip and development boards, the Musca-S1 test chip delivers a combination of on-chip power control, Samsung Foundry’s Reverse Body Biasing (RBB) and eMRAM non-volatile memory power shutdown, allowing for testing and evaluation of new classes of highly energy-efficient, controlled IoT devices. And for the first time on Samsung Foundry silicon, designers will have the opportunity to run Arm Mbed OS and test device and data management capabilities using the Arm Pelion IoT platform.
IoT designers will benefit from the complementary expertise offered as a result of the collaboration between Arm, Cadence, Samsung Foundry and Sondrel. Apply Arm’s robust IoT security portfolio to create products on Samsung Foundry's process nodes. Utilize Sondrel’s accelerated design services employing the Cadence silicon-proven digital full implementation and verification flow. With all these combined, Musca-S1 provides IoT security designs in one device which can reduce design risks, accelerate development schedules, and allow designers to focus on core product differentiation.
Before Musca-S1 test chip and development boards become available with limited quantities in Q3 2019 and the loaner program starts in Q4 2019, customers can experience the live demo as part of an air quality monitoring system, featuring the device and data management capabilities of the Arm Pelion IoT platform at series of worldwide events starting DAC. Musca-S1 will be demonstrated at Samsung Electronics booth, DAC #546; Cadence and Arm will have a Musca-S1 presentation at Cadence booth #915.
