Arm and UNICEF’s ‘Wearables for Good’ winner wins at GenH Challenge 2018

 Arm and UNICEF have been working together since 2015 to use the power of technology to transform the lives of the world’s most vulnerable children.

In 2015, together we launched the ‘Wearables for Good' challenge alongside Frog, which called on innovative designers, engineers and technologists from all over the world to develop new wearable and sensor-based devices to improve the lives of vulnerable children globally.

The challenge set out to demonstrate how wearable technology can be used to solve some of the most pressing challenges facing these children. After 250 entries, 10 finalists were chosen to develop their ideas further through a period of mentoring and coaching before the two winners - Khushi Baby and SoaPen - were selected by an expert panel of judges in November 2015.

Khushi Baby is a digital necklace designed to make an individuals’ medical history wearable and accessible to enable healthcare workers to monitor mothers and children at the last mile. The digital health record for each patient is stored and updated using an NFC chip. This digital storage device records information of the patient’s entire record from antenatal care through infant immunizations, as well as their vital signs such as body temperature, blood pressure and heart rate.

The necklace successfully demonstrated how wearable technology can address some of the fundamental challenges children face in the areas of immunization whilst unleashing the power of technology to transform lives. Since its launch, Khushi Baby has been deployed among 10,000 patients to successfully track over 50,000 vaccinations for children.

In January 2018, Khushi Baby was selected as the Grand Prize winner of Johnson & Johnson's GenH challenge. They have won a $250K prize and access to J&J's Innovation labs to help further with their transition to scale. 

Arm is incredibly proud of Khushi Baby and their incredible work for children. We have watched and supported them to grow from an original idea into a game changing product for the world’s children.
