Today we celebrate the influence of a world-renowned mathematician who is credited with being the world’s first computer programmer. Working with another early computer pioneer, Ada Lovelace created the first known algorithm and, as a result, made a significant contribution to the world of technology. Staff Implementation Engineer Skill Group Leader

Q: What you have been up to today?

Attending meetings, debugging implementation problems to help a product achieve the desired performance.

Q: How and when did you first get interested in a career in technology? Have you always worked in tech?

I first became interested in a technology career when I was 16 I was offered a summer 6 week placement at Ferranti (an electronics company). I then went onto study electronics at University and have worked in the electronic engineering ever since.

Q: What were your favourite subjects at school and why?

Maths, Geography, Physics, Music. Mainly because I found them easier to understand but also because they were challenging (i.e not boring).

Q: Who was your favourite teacher and why?

I didn't really have a favourite but two teachers stood out, Maths & Geography, because they were so passionate about their subjects and the lessons were fun with it seemed no structure so it didn't really feel like we were being taught but more like we were on an adventure of discovery.

Q: What do you enjoy most about your job?

Interesting challenging problems. Even if we don't find an ideal solution having a go is always interesting and can be fun.

Q: ARM sponsors HackLab, who follows what they call the 'Hacker Code'. Which one is the most important to you and why?

Go Find Out - "I don't know" is not an answer. "Let's find out!" is what hackers say.

Definitely do not be afraid to fail; in fact embrace failures because that is the way to learn!

Q: Women face many challenges in the technology industry but also bring many strengths. What do you think is the best part of being a woman in tech?

We often think of the problem in a different way. Also in my experience we are good at communicating and getting a design team to collaborate.
